Evaluation Question 3

What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?
I think that a smaller publisher would be more likely to publish my magazine than a large company. This is because my magazine is aimed at a niche audience. I would not think that it would need to be published by a large company like Bauer because it may be overrun with other, more popular magazines. I would publish my magazine with a company like Future (who publish Classic Rock magazine and Metal Hammer) because they are a small but trusted company.
I think this decision would be a good choice because there aren't any similar products and my magazine would be fresh and new for the publisher as well as the distributor. Although Future carries Classic Rock, my magazine is slightly different and may appeal to those who read Classic Rock too. Classic Rock has become a multi-platform media using prints, internet, television and radio. It reaches over one million fans every month world wide.
My magazine and Classic Rock could advertise each other because they target very similar audiences, of mainly the same gender and age range. My magazine could be marketed on the internet and using free giveaways and downloads to help increase its popularity.

There are several advantages and disadvantages of publishing a magazine with a large company. With a large company you can pretty much be sure that your magazine won't lose money or go bust. If the company gets in trouble then the debt is split between many people, whereas an independent company is all down to one person.
Independent publishers will have more control and freedom over what they publish and how much of it whereas larger companies won't have the focus on your magazine. The larger companies may focus more on the profits your magazine rather than the actual content and therefore may be entitled to change some articles in order to bring in more money.
